A long time ago, back in 2009, I saw a trailer for an adaptation of Where the Wild Things Are. It had some catchy indie music and what looked like gorgeous art direction- still, I was cautious. WtWTA was one of my favorite books as a child, and I had a hard time imagining how it could be turned into a movie.
Long story short, I ended up seeing it twice.
So I loved the movie and its totally unique vision. When I heard they were making promotional skateboards, my mind raced- the art of WtWTA is iconic, so surely they'd do something mind-blowing. The results were.... less than satisfying. So, with this in mind, I decided to see if I could come up with better looking skateboards on my own. The original boards are on the left, while my designs are on the right. I wanted to focus on the texture of each monster- the original book was one you could practically feel. The hatchings and pen scratches gave each of the Wild Things a personality, even before they had names. Hopefully I succeeded in doing justice to Sendak's work.
